Case Study: The Aerospace Industry

Fosse Liquitrol Assists the Aerospace Industry With Spill Risk Minimisation

The Aerospace Industry in the UK is booming with order books full due to demand for both commercial and military Aircraft. Driven by the high standards required from their main ultimate customers, such as Rolls Royce and Pratt and Witney, the supply companies to the Aerospace Industry are increasingly serious about environmental standards. They recognise the need to reach legal compliance with the new Control of Pollution legislation, and to go beyond legal requirements by reaching ISO 14001 environmental standards.

Part of ISO 14001 is the minimisation and avoidance of spill risk. Fosse Liquitrol has a comprehensive programme of services and products to assist companies achieve this goal. These include Site Spill Risk Assessment, Site Drain Surveys, Bulk Tank and Bund Repair and Relining Surveys and Accredited Spill Risk Training.

At Rolls Royce, Fosse Liquitrol have carried out an extensive Site Assessment and provided the equipment, through the preferred supplier, to mitigate liquid spills. “The Report provided by Fosse Liquitrol as a result of their Site Assessment was professional, comprehensive and very useful” said Ted Griffiths, Civil Aerospace Environmental Specialist at Rolls Royce.

Callender Aeroparts in Accrington, Lancs, manufacture titanium blades (for jet engines) for a number of major aerospace jet engine manufacturing companies. One of them, Rolls Royce, have made it perfectly clear to their suppliers that they expect high environmental standards. Callender Aeroparts are therefore registering for ISO 14001.
As part of their preparation, Callender Aeroparts contacted Fosse Liquitrol to carry out a Spill Risk Minimisation site assessment for them, free of charge. Fosse Liquitrol were asked by Callender Aeroparts to review their level of preparadness to respond to any uncontrolled releases of liquid and to identify ways in which risks of spills can be minimised. On implementing the recommendations and equipping the plant , through their preferred supplier with Fosse Liquitrol equipment, they then enrolled key members of their team in an onsite Accredited Spill Prevention and Response Training course. Alan Thorburn at Callender Aeroparts says “Training key personnel in knowing how to respond to environmental incidents is a key requirement in implementing ISO 14001 and Fosse Liquitrol provided us with an excellent “hands on “ course tailor made to our situation and requirements”
